Two bronze medals for HK in Asian Games fencing

Hong Kong secured two bronze medals in fencing at the Asian Games, following the women’s foil and men’s sabre teams' semifinal exits. The women’s foil team, comprising Janelle Leung, Valerie Cheng, Sophia Wu, and Daphne Chan, lost 27-45 to Japan in the semifinals on Saturday. Leung initially fell behind 3-5 to Japan’s Yuka Ueno, but Cheng and Wu maintained a competitive score of 12-15 after three bouts. Despite an intense fifth bout with no change, Japan maintained their lead and advanced to the final.

The men’s sabre team, featuring Hugo Ho, Aaron Ho, Royce Chan, and Leung Tin-ching, also fell short, losing 24-45 to South Korea. Hugo Ho trailed 2-5 in the first bout, but South Korea intensified its attacks, leading throughout and extending their advantage. In the decisive anchor bout, Oh Sang-uk, the defending individual sabre champion at the Games, secured South Korea’s victory with a 45-24 scoreline.

With no third-place match in team events, Hong Kong concluded the day with two bronze medals. The team remains hopeful for additional fencing medals on the final day, which includes the men’s épée team and women’s sabre team events. Hong Kong will face the United Arab Emirates in the round of 16 for the men’s épée, while the women will compete against South Korea in the quarterfinals.
