Drug cartels may be seeing Ghana as easy route – Lenin Anane Agyei

Lawyer and lecturer Lenin Nicholas Anane Agyei has cautioned that recent drug seizures suggest narcotics traffickers may be considering Ghana as an easy route for moving illicit drugs. Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, he emphasized that the lapses in the country's security systems must be addressed, noting that the government should take responsibility for identifying and rectifying existing security gaps.

"There have been some lapses in our system, and so regardless of how you want to look at it, those lapses happened under this government, and so somebody must be responsible for it under this government," he stated. Agyei argued that security and narcotics authorities should not only monitor existing systems but also regularly evaluate them, identify weaknesses, and implement measures to prevent exploitation.

He cautioned against attempts to shift responsibility for these lapses, emphasizing that the government has been in office for two years, and any blame-shifting should not go unaddressed. The volume of narcotics intercepted within a short timeframe, according to Agyei, signals that drug trafficking networks might have identified weaknesses in Ghana's systems.

He warned that this development could have significant repercussions for Ghana's international reputation and economy. Heightened scrutiny of Ghanaian exports and travelers by foreign jurisdictions could occur as a result of repeated drug interceptions and concerns over trafficking. This reputational damage could have a severe impact on Ghana's economy, particularly for genuine exporters who may face increased inspections by foreign entities.
