Colombia extradites rebel leader to US as its security strategy aligns with Washington

Colombian warlord Geovany Andres Rojas, known for his leadership in the rebel group Comandos de la Frontera, has been extradited to the United States. This extradition, initially delayed due to Rojas being designated a peace negotiator by the previous government, comes as Colombia's security strategy aligns more closely with that of the United States.

Rojas faces drug trafficking and terrorism charges in the U.S. and was arrested in Bogota in February 2025. The Colombian Supreme Court approved his extradition to the U.S. in October, following a decision by newly elected conservative President Abelardo de la Espriella to lift the ban that had been in place. This shift in Colombian policy marks a significant change in the nation's approach to dealing with narcoterrorists, signaling a potential for tighter collaboration and cooperation between the two nations in their fight against drug trafficking and associated criminal activities.
