Choosing a school as a parent in Mexico? We know how it feels

Relocating to Veracruz from California, the writer and their family sought a better balance between family time and professional career opportunities. They chose to prioritize family and invested time in exploring the country, establishing connections with extended relatives living within a few miles of their home. As their son grew, the family faced the challenging decision of choosing a school for him to attend.

The writer and their wife deliberated on the timing of sending their bilingual toddler to school and what nonnegotiable benefits they expected from it. While the process can be complex and time-consuming, having a strong network of family and friends in the area proved invaluable. Though not initially a priority, the writer and their family eventually considered private schooling options in Mexico. However, they discovered that private schools in Mexico do not necessarily guarantee superior academic performance, compared to public schools. In their case, the writer and their wife prioritized an enriching, multimodal learning environment with students from diverse backgrounds, rather than focusing on the English language aspect.
