China, US agree to set up channel for AI safety incidents

Beijing and Washington have reached an agreement to establish a communication channel for addressing artificial intelligence safety incidents, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry. This follows the conclusion of a three-day summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two nations also agreed to reduce tariffs on approximately $30 billion worth of non-sensitive goods, affecting exports such as agricultural products and holiday decorations.

The agreement comes after the summit, with Xi returning to Beijing and expressing the agreement on strategic stability based on respect, fairness, and reciprocity. The US and China will also accelerate work on military crisis communications, though specific details were not provided. The White House announced the extension of a trade truce between the two countries, initially agreed upon by Trump and Xi in October, until January.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the deal will remain in effect until January. The two leaders are scheduled to meet twice more by the end of the year, with Trump attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in China in November and Xi returning to the US for a G20 summit in December.
