China and the US agree to set up a new AI safety channel, and to keep talking on trade, military

China and the United States agreed to establish a new channel for handling AI-related incidents and to intensify efforts on military crisis communications following a three-day summit between their leaders in Washington, according to statements released on Saturday. The two nations also committed to continuing their work on a board for bilateral trade issues, with the White House announcing that the board had begun operations earlier in the week.

Although the summit did not produce any significant breakthroughs, experts view the steps towards increased cooperation as important. These measures include the establishment of working groups that aim to prevent problems from escalating between the two powers. President Xi Jinping returned to Beijing on Saturday, where he exchanged a notably warm reception with President Donald Trump, despite the tense trade relations that had been strained just the previous year.
