Belleville, Ont., gathers for annual Porchfest in wake of synagogue attack

The head of a prominent Jewish advocacy organization, Noah Shack, has declared that the recent violent assault at a synagogue in Belleville, Ontario, should act as a "wake-up call" regarding the growing issue of antisemitism and racist conspiracies in Canada. This statement came shortly after the Yom Kippur shooting that left a police officer in critical condition and the perpetrator dead.

During a press conference at Parliament Hill, Shack emphasized that the incident could have occurred in any location across the nation. He spoke alongside Jewish university students who reported an increase in antisemitic incidents both on and off campus.

In June, the Canadian Parliament enacted the Combatting Hate Act, which introduced new Criminal Code offenses targeting hate-motivated intimidation of specific groups, such as through the intentional display of certain Nazi symbols. Liberal MP Anthony Housefather expressed his desire to see specialized prosecutors handling all hate cases, and the federal justice and public safety ministers appeared open to this proposal.

On Thursday, it was reported that the shooting outside the synagogue was a hate-motivated attack aimed at the Jewish community.
