Bangkok declares disaster in all 50 districts as heavy rain triggers severe floods

Bangkok's authorities declared a disaster on Saturday across all 50 districts of the Thai capital following continuous heavy rain that caused severe flooding. The declaration, which empowers local organizations to take action, came after the governor reported that nearly 300 millimeters (11.8 inches) of rain had fallen since Thursday.

Residents near canals, especially in the eastern part of the city, are struggling with the rising water levels. Somkid Pheuk-ngam, a 67-year-old vendor, expressed her concern, stating that the current situation is worse than the 2011 flood. She has been unable to leave her shop for two days due to the floodwaters reaching her waist level.

The Bangkok Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, warned that more rain is expected and emphasized that the risk areas are those living near canals. He urged residents to move their cars to higher ground and advised bedridden patients relying on medical equipment to consider temporary hospital stays.
