AU chief presses Africa-Arab partnership towards implementation

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has called upon African and Arab governments to transform political commitments into practical initiatives, emphasizing the need for decisive action ahead of the partnership's 50th anniversary in 2027. Speaking at the 10th Ministerial Meeting of the Coordination Committee of the Africa-Arab Partnership, Youssouf stressed the importance of transitioning from declarations to implementation.

He highlighted the completion of the Joint Africa-Arab Action Plan, setting firm timelines for priority projects, and establishing sustainable financing arrangements as crucial steps to achieve tangible results. The meeting convened ministers and senior representatives from both African and Arab states, aiming to reinvigorate a cooperation framework encompassing trade, investment, infrastructure, security, and development.

Building on discussions from a senior officials' meeting held in Cairo on August 5, Youssouf noted the upcoming 50th anniversary as an opportunity to evaluate the partnership's achievements, address unresolved issues, and lay out a more strategic and pragmatic path forward. Key priorities for the AU Commission chairperson included enhanced trade and investment, infrastructure development, peace and security, food security, and increased cultural and knowledge exchange.

Youssouf's emphasis on financing and implementation was crucial, positioning these elements as the cornerstone for the partnership's next phase. He advocated for clear project beneficiaries and deadlines to enhance accountability and coordination between the African Union Commission and the League of Arab States. The ministerial meeting also underscored the necessity for closer institutional coordination, particularly as the two organizations prepare for the fifth Africa-Arab Summit.

Participants from various African and Arab governments echoed the call for stronger economic ties, stressing the importance of developing mechanisms to respond to economic and security challenges while emphasizing investment, trade, and sustainable development. The coordination process aims to ensure political and technical follow-up between the two regional groupings, with the 2027 milestone set as a year of renewal and renewed commitment to address outstanding challenges.
