2 dead, 4 missing after explosion destroys building in Athens

Two individuals have lost their lives and four others remain missing following a devastating explosion that brought down a residential building in Athens, Greece. The catastrophic event occurred in a bustling tourist area of central Athens, specifically in Plaka, a neighborhood renowned for its proximity to iconic attractions such as the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus.

On Friday, the explosion caused significant damage to a two-story building, resulting in injuries to three people, destruction of nearby homes, shops, and vehicles, and scattering debris up to three blocks away.

Emergency response teams, clad in protective gear and equipped with rescue dogs, are diligently searching for an elderly couple who previously resided in one of the apartments and four tourists who were staying in another. On Saturday, the grim task of removing debris from the demolished building yielded the remains of a man and a young woman. The site is now a chaotic scene of twisted metal, shattered tiles, and concrete slabs, with household items and clothing scattered amidst the wreckage.

The rescue operation is proving to be challenging due to the extensive collapse of the building and the heightened risk to adjacent structures, which have been evacuated for security purposes. Constantina Dimoglidou, a police spokeswoman, conveyed the difficulties faced by the rescue teams to public broadcaster ERT.

The victims are believed to be tourists, specifically two American couples who had planned to check out of their accommodation to catch a flight from Athens airport at 3pm on Friday. However, they failed to arrive, raising concerns among authorities. The cause of the explosion remains unclear, but it is speculated, based on insights from a police source, to be linked to issues with the gas infrastructure in the region.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas commented on Friday that it was a "terrible" situation, suggesting that "something went terribly wrong."
