Westbury high school: Houston ISD student shot dead on Dryad Street near campus; no suspect arrested yet

On Friday morning, a Westbury High School student was shot and killed near the Houston Independent School District campus, according to the Houston Police Department. The 17-year-old senior was shot around 8:21 a.m. on Dryad Street, in an area where students usually gather before starting their classes. Police Chief Noe Diaz stated that the incident occurred in a wooded area adjacent to an apartment complex, where a confrontation ensued and a handgun was produced, leading to the tragic loss of a life.

No other students or staff were injured, and no suspect has been arrested. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are actively searching for the individual responsible. Diaz expressed his sorrow over the loss and emphasized that such events should not occur in their community. The victim's family is reportedly devastated, with the grandmother and mother devastated by the tragic event.

In response to the incident, the Houston Independent School District initiated "Secure mode" operations at the high school, allowing classes to continue while investigators worked on the case. The Texas Department of Public Safety is assisting in the investigation. This marks the second shooting incident at a Houston-area school, following a fatal shooting of a 15-year-old at a Spring ISD high school earlier this week.
