Watch: Rainfall triggers major landslide in Sikkim's Rimbi

On Thursday night, a significant landslide occurred in Rimbi village, West Sikkim's Yuksom-Tashiding constituency, resulting in the damage of several residences and government buildings. As of yet, there are no reported casualties. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang emphasized the seriousness of the situation and instructed authorities to remain vigilant, closely monitor the development, and take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of residents.

The landslide caused damage to numerous houses, with debris spreading into inhabited areas and causing harm to various structures, including those belonging to the Power Department. Residents expressed concern over the potential risks posed by the ongoing rainfall, which could further endanger nearby homes, properties, and transportation routes.

The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in Gangtok has launched a comprehensive assessment of the damage, involving a multi-agency team led by Kabi Tingda MLA Tshering T Bhutia and other officials. Inspections were conducted at various locations, including the Luing-Ranka Highway, Lower Bojoghari, and other areas impacted by the landslide.

The teams assessed the damage to roads, mud and debris flows, and residential structures. The Sewage Treatment Plant at Sichey and debris accumulation near the Enchey School also pose potential hazards, leading to precautionary measures such as placing tarpaulins over vulnerable slide zones. Authorities have directed concerned departments to clear roads, restore connectivity, assess damage, and provide assistance to affected residents.

The District Collector and DDMA Chairman have urged people to avoid travel through landslide-prone areas and remain alert, especially during nighttime. Chief Minister Tamang expressed deep sorrow and concern over the Rimbi situation, stating that the government remains firmly committed to the well-being of the people in the region.
