UK universities urge fresh graduates to apply for welfare support

UK universities have urged recent graduates to apply for welfare benefits such as Universal Credit and Jobseeker's Allowance, despite some graduates already having job offers or living with their parents. Institutions like King’s College London, Loughborough University, and the University of Stirling have published guidance encouraging students to claim these benefits to ensure a smooth transition from full-time study to employment.

King’s College London, in particular, emphasized that students should not feel ashamed about seeking help during this critical period, stating that these benefits are designed to support graduates during the challenging transition from education to the workforce. The University of Stirling and Loughborough University also issued similar advice, urging students to apply for benefits from the day after their course officially ends.

These recommendations come as the UK grapples with concerns over the graduate job market and rising youth unemployment, with the unemployment rate among 16-to-24-year-olds reaching a decade-high. While some critics, including Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott, have dismissed the guidance as detrimental to graduates, others, like Nick Hillman of the Higher Education Policy Institute, assert that these support measures are crucial for helping graduates navigate the uncertainties of the job market.
