TOR secures 950,000 barrels of Sankofa crude from GNPC

The Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) has successfully received 950,000 barrels of crude oil from Ghana's Sankofa-Gye Nyame field via a collaboration with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC). This marks TOR's first time refining crude from the field, and the shipment will be processed into petroleum products for the local market.

Transported by Sonangol Cazenga, the crude will bolster Ghana's refining capacity and promote the use of domestically produced crude to meet domestic fuel demands. Sankofa crude is typically shipped in batches of roughly 950,000 barrels. TOR's Managing Director highlighted the partnership with GNPC as a means to bolster the refinery's operations while retaining more value from Ghana's petroleum resources.

The delivery of Sankofa crude is a significant milestone for TOR, as it contributes to a more resilient and sustainable petroleum industry. The shipment coincides with TOR's ongoing efforts to restore full operations after extensive turnaround maintenance. President John Dramani Mahama's 2026 State of the Nation Address confirmed that the refinery had resumed crude processing for the first time since 2018.

TOR and GNPC are expected to explore additional collaboration opportunities, with the Managing Director crediting President Mahama, Energy Minister John Abdulai Jinapor, and the refinery's tolling partners for their support.
