Tomato Glut At Indore’s Choithram Mandi: Arrivals Outpace Demand, Crates Run Out Of Space

Indore's Choithram wholesale mandi is experiencing a tomato glut as arrivals far outstrip local demand due to increased production this season. With supplies arriving from Sendhwa, Palsud and Jalwaniya areas, the city consumes approximately 5,000 to 7,000 crates of tomatoes daily. However, the influx of crates has led to a shortage of storage space, making it difficult to keep the produce organized and affecting loading and unloading operations.

Traders demand expansion and better management of the available space to handle the growing business efficiently. They also raise concerns over the mandi's fee collection system, alleging higher amounts are being collected, and seek an inquiry from the mandi administration for greater transparency. Another issue is garbage dumping inside the mandi premises by the municipal corporation, which causes foul smells and potential health problems, negatively impacting the working environment and visitors.
