Canadian potash company invests $500M in North Vancouver shipping terminal

A Saskatchewan-based potash exporter, Canpotex, has committed to investing $500 million in upgrading a North Vancouver shipping terminal to enhance Canadian potash shipments, according to a news release from the Saskatchewan government. The funds will be used to replace and refurbish equipment at the Port of Vancouver’s Neptune Bulk Terminals.

During a groundbreaking event for the Canpotex infrastructure project, the company’s president and CEO, Gordon McKenzie, emphasized that this investment will ensure the reliable export of Saskatchewan potash through the Port of Vancouver to overseas markets for years to come. The Port of Vancouver terminals, including Neptune, are playing a crucial role in moving Canadian-made goods to global markets as part of Canada’s objective to double exports to non-U.S. markets, stated the Port of Vancouver’s President and CEO, Peter Xotta.

The investment is significant, as it will better connect Saskatchewan potash to key international markets, including South America and the Indo-Pacific. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe emphasized that this project reinforces the province’s position in the global potash market, as it will create new opportunities and support job growth in Saskatchewan and across Canada.

In the first seven months of this year, Saskatchewan exported $5.9 billion worth of potash, according to data from the province’s Ministry of Energy and Resources.
