Tasia Fortune Update: Death 'Staged' After Black Woman Found Hanging—Police

JACKSON, Mississippi - Detectives now believe that Tasia Fortune was already deceased before her body was hanged from a tree behind an abandoned home in the state's capital earlier this summer, according to testimony from a police detective. On August 3rd, the body was discovered hanging, and while the exact cause of her death remains unreported, it has been officially classified as a homicide.

Police have arrested two Black men on murder charges, and a warrant has been issued for the arrest of a third individual. Detective Samuel Dukes testified that the hanging was "staged," citing the medical examiner's opinion. The motive for the killing appears to have been a drug-related dispute. Interviews with others revealed that Fortune put up a strong fight before her death.

The case has garnered significant attention due to its resemblance to historical lynchings in the Southern state, which has a history of racial violence. Authorities have not disclosed the reason behind their belief that the defendants hanged Fortune's body after she was already deceased. The first defendant, Jarques Ratliff, 51, has pleaded not guilty and remains in custody without bond.

The trial is scheduled to resume on September 30th, during which a determination will be made regarding the sufficiency of evidence to send the case to a grand jury for potential indictment.

Fortune, who had four children, struggled with homelessness in recent years. Her mother, Christy Spivey, stated that Fortune had discussed starting a cleaning business and was attempting to regain control of her life when she met her untimely end.
