Black woman Tasia Fortune’s hanging was ‘staged’ after her death, Mississippi police say

Tasia Fortune, a black woman, was hanged from a tree behind an abandoned home in Jackson, Mississippi, in July, according to a police detective's testimony. The hanging of Fortune's body, discovered on August 3, was described as "staged" by detective Samuel Dukes, who was testifying at a hearing for one of the suspects. The medical examiner's opinion supported this claim, suggesting that Fortune had already died before the hanging occurred.

The cause of Fortune's death has not been disclosed, but it has been ruled as a homicide. Two black men, Jarques Ratliff and Earnest Lloyd, have been arrested and charged with murder, with a warrant issued for a third person's arrest. Dukes also testified that the motive for the killing appears to be a drug dispute, as revealed through interviews with others.
