Ryan Gerard in contention at French Open as Matt Fitzpatrick leads

Paris (AP) — Ryan Gerard, who may have been representing the United States in the Presidents Cup this week, finds himself in contention at a major European tour event for the second consecutive week. After shooting a 6-under 65 on Friday, Gerard sits three shots behind the leader at the halfway point of the French Open at Le Golf National outside Paris.

World No. 4 Matt Fitzpatrick, currently leading the tournament with a 13-under 129 score, solidified his position after shooting a 64 in the second round. Jeff Winther, also shooting 64, occupies the third spot, while defending champion Michael Kim of the United States trails in fourth place after a final round 68.

Despite his recent strong performances, Gerard did not make the U.S. team for the Presidents Cup, held in Medinah, despite finishing third at the Tour Championship last month. Gerard had earlier led the European tour's flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship, by two shots after 36 holes before finishing tied for 27th.
