Prosecutors drop case in which Wałęsa was accused of lying about being communist collaborator

Prosecutors have concluded a lengthy investigation into former Polish President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Lech Wałęsa, ending charges that he falsely claimed to have not authored documents related to alleged communist collaboration. Wałęsa, who played a pivotal role in the Solidarity movement that ended communist rule in Poland, has consistently denied allegations that he acted as a communist informant in the 1970s.

The case, which gained significant political attention due to right-wing criticism from the Law and Justice (PiS) party, was dropped in 2024 after the current ruling coalition took office. Waldemar Żurek, Tusk’s justice minister and prosecutor general, praised the decision, stating that "truth has triumphed over an attempt to rewrite history."

Wałęsa, who turns 83 next week, faces no prosecution and will not serve jail time for the alleged false testimony.
