President Mahama should consider reassigning Haruna Iddrisu over education challenges – Charles Owusu

Social commentator Rev. Charles Owusu has urged President John Mahama to consider transferring Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu to another department, citing the sector's pressing issues that merit a fresh perspective. Speaking on Asempa FM's Ekosii Sen, Owusu emphasized that education, agriculture, and national security should be treated as national matters, not subject to partisan politics.

He highlighted the critical plight of teachers and schools, stating that the current approach to the sector is inadequate and lacks seriousness. Owusu recalled his own experience as a candidate, where teachers in his constituency had to sit on students' chairs due to a lack of proper seating. He also expressed concern over the deplorable living conditions of some teachers and the delays in the payment of their allowances and benefits.

Owusu argued that addressing these challenges would significantly improve the quality of education. He called on the Education Ministry to engage with teacher unions to find lasting solutions. His remarks follow the announcement of a nationwide strike by Ghana's three major teacher unions, citing persistent delays in addressing their concerns.
