Premier League Joins Call for FIFA Reforms

Four of Europe's top football leagues have joined together to demand "fundamental" changes to the way FIFA, football's global governing body, is run. The Premier League, La Liga, Bundesliga, and Serie A all signed onto a joint statement, criticizing FIFA President Gianni Infantino for promoting "exploitative ideas."

The four leagues argue that Infantino's leadership has actively undermined the transparency, objectivity, proportionality, and inclusivity of FIFA's operations. They say their sport cannot grow globally if FIFA's foundations are weakened.

While football stakeholders ultimately forced Infantino to withdraw the "Fifa Forward Enterprise" scheme, the statement points out the underlying problems remain. The leagues say Infantino has now acknowledged the need for reform, but it is not enough just to explore surface-level changes. They insist that fundamental governance reform is essential to restore clear boundaries and prevent political interference in disciplinary matters.

The leagues emphasize that FIFA's current governance structure, with one individual holding regulatory, commercial, and political power, is unfit for purpose. They argue that FIFA needs checks and balances, and stakeholders must have a genuine say rather than merely being advisory. The statement acknowledges Infantino's role as a single point of failure in FIFA's governance crisis.
