Pope warns against losing humanity to AI

Pope Leo XIV has cautioned against the potential loss of humanity as artificial intelligence advances, suggesting that the integration of "machines into paradise" could lead to a decline in human values. During the start of his four-day visit to France, the pontiff made these remarks to Church and state officials at the Élysée Palace in Paris following discussions with French President Emmanuel Macron.

Pope Leo emphasized the importance of preserving human dignity amidst the growing influence of artificial intelligence, as he began a journey expected to draw large crowds throughout France. The main event, scheduled for Saturday, will see more than half a million people attend Mass in Paris, with an altar already constructed at the Place de la Concorde.

Security measures are in place around the Champs-Élysées and surrounding areas ahead of the event. Pope Leo arrived in France on Friday, greeted at Orly airport by Macron and is set to travel through Paris in his popemobile, with large crowds anticipated along the route to Notre-Dame Cathedral. While Macron is not expected to attend the Pope’s Masses due to France's strict separation between church and state, his wife and Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu are expected to.

Prominent French political figures, including Marine Le Pen and Bruno Retailleau, are also expected to attend. The visit, which will conclude on Monday in Metz, aims to highlight Robert Schuman, a Catholic and founding figure of the European Union.
