Pietersen holds Ashes talks with England coach Fleming

Kevin Pietersen, who recently joined England's backroom staff after a decade away from international cricket, has discussed potential involvement in the upcoming Ashes series with test coach Stephen Fleming. However, the 46-year-old, England's third-highest run scorer across all formats, indicated his current schedule precludes a broader role.

Pietersen, appointed as a specialist mentor for the white-ball teams this month in preparation for the 2027 World Cup, shared that he has had discussions with Fleming regarding the language he should use with test batters prior to the Ashes in South Africa and the following summer. "I’ve got a pretty mad schedule, (but) I wouldn’t say no," Pietersen stated.

Pietersen, who previously scored nearly 14,000 runs for England across all formats, reflected on his controversial return to the national team after his abrupt exit in 2014 following England's 5-0 Ashes defeat in Australia. Despite remaining interested in playing for England, he was informed he was no longer part of the plans, marking a bitter conclusion to his international career.

Pietersen, now 46, acknowledged that his past tensions and emotions have faded, and he now sees himself as someone capable of helping the team avoid negative experiences. In his first series with England after rejoining, the team secured a 3-0 whitewash over spin-heavy Sri Lanka, earning a top position in the T20 world rankings.
