New York’s Nor’easter Threat Grows With Volatile Storm Track

A powerful coastal storm is set to impact the Eastern Seaboard, with New York City expected to face damaging winds, flooding, and power outages through Sunday. Up to 6 inches of rain is forecasted to fall, accompanied by 50 mph wind gusts in Manhattan. The nor'easter, already causing large swells from the Mid-Atlantic to Maine, is intensifying with a shifting storm track.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a state of emergency for eight counties encompassing the city and surrounding areas. Hochul warned residents to take the storm seriously, citing "dangerous coastal flooding, strong winds, and potential power outages through the weekend." Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City stated that workers were preparing for downed trees and clogged catch basins due to anticipated flooding.

The most severe flooding is predicted for Saturday morning, with up to 2 feet of water potentially washing ashore on top of the high tide, which is expected to be higher than usual due to the full moon on Saturday, known as the "Harvest Moon." As of 4:20 p.m. New York time, 226 flights had been canceled across the US, primarily at Boston's Logan International Airport and other airfields in Massachusetts.

Ferry travel between downtown Boston and surrounding communities has been canceled due to high winds and significant waves. Pop star Ed Sheeran's concerts at Gillette Stadium outside of Boston and the Global Citizens Festival in Central Park were canceled, as was the All Things Go NYC event at Forest Hills Stadium.
