Najib arrives at High Court to seek stay of 15-year 1MDB sentence

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak arrived at the High Court on September 25 to submit a request for a stay of his 15-year prison sentence and RM11.38 billion fine in relation to the misappropriation of RM2.3 billion from the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) fund. Wearing a light grey suit and white shirt, Najib was escorted under tight security by prison officials as he was brought from Kajang Prison to the courthouse.

The application, filed nine months after a previous ruling, will be heard by Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin. The matter originated on December 26 last year, when Judge Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah handed down his decision regarding the case. The Federal Territories Pardons Board announced its decision on September 18, granting Najib a conditional pardon allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028, subject to specified conditions.

Najib is currently incarcerated at Kajang Prison and has been ordered to pay a RM50 million fine as part of the conditions for serving his sentence at home.
