Millions in US northeast brace for powerful storm

Over 40 million individuals across the northeastern United States are preparing for a major storm this weekend, according to forecasts. New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia are anticipated to be directly impacted by this "Nor'easter," characterized by northeasterly winds. Authorities have issued warnings regarding potential flooding, downed trees, and power line damage.

Notably, British pop sensation Ed Sheeran has called off his weekend concerts near Boston due to the impending storm, which could produce winds exceeding 100 km/h along the eastern seaboard. The Federal Aviation Administration has advised travelers to consult their website for travel advisories, stating that there is always a possibility of restrictions based on weather conditions.

Three major airlines - JetBlue, United, and American - have announced travel alerts permitting passengers to modify their flights without penalties. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has advised residents to "look out for your neighbors" as updated forecasts suggest the storm is moving closer to the city than initially anticipated. Those planning travel this weekend are advised to allocate additional time, verify their transportation arrangements, and steer clear of coastal roads near high tide.

Up to 13 centimeters of rainfall, equivalent to more than a month's worth of precipitation, is expected in parts of Massachusetts, including Boston. Strong winds and coastal flooding, along with rip currents, are expected to affect the region, as per the National Weather Service. Coastal areas of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and New Jersey have already experienced flooding this week.

While nor'easters can occur at any time of year, they are more common during the fall and early spring, typically accompanying heavy rain or snowfall and strong gusty winds.
