For several years, Microsoft's Copilot client lineup has been fragmented, with consumer and enterprise AI tools sharing the same brand but having distinct interfaces and features. Around 70% of workers now utilize AI regularly, though many lack the opportunity to enhance their skills. Last month, Microsoft introduced a unified app named Copilot, initially targeting mobile platforms and now moving towards desktop environments.

The new Copilot is specifically designed for Microsoft's enterprise customers, not for consumers. Its feature set caters to organizations already deeply entrenched in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem, focusing on Outlook, Teams, and documents created using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These organizations also desire AI tools to operate on their company data in a secure and controlled environment, avoiding potential risks associated with sending data to external clouds.

At a small launch event for key customers, Copilot Executive VP Jacob Andreou emphasized that Microsoft's consumer base is "a little bit special." He pointed out that approximately 90 million customers pay for Microsoft 365 from their own pockets, stating that these users do not want a simplified consumer product; they seek the full capabilities offered to enterprise users but within the context of their personal lives.

The user experience is not the only aspect that differs in the new Copilot. Andreou noted that Copilot has become significantly faster, more capable, and more coherent and unified. Users have responded positively to these improvements. The new Copilot features three tabs: Home, Code, and Autopilot. The user interface remains consistent, whether signed in with a personal or work account.

For work accounts, the significant difference is that tools and agents have secure, compliant access via Work IQ APIs to the extensive data stored in Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, Dynamics 365, and other repositories within the Microsoft-hosted enterprise cloud. The Home tab combines functions previously located on separate Chat and Cowork tabs.

Chat serves as the familiar conversational mode for generating document drafts or seeking answers, while Cowork is the agentic side, completing tasks from start to finish.

One new feature highlighted in the announcement is Office in Copilot. Users can ask Copilot to create a launch plan in Word or a budget in Excel, receiving a real, editable document, workbook, or presentation that can be edited and collaborated on directly within the Copilot app. Additionally, a Today view, which will be a proactive, personalized command center across mail, calendar, Teams threads, meetings, and tasks, is set to become available in a private preview in October, and will later be integrated into Outlook and Teams.
