Meta misled consumers in case over Cambridge Analytica scandal, New Mexico jury says

A New Mexico jury ruled on Friday that Meta Platforms deceived the state's residents, according to the Santa Fe verdict. The case stemmed from claims that Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting firm involved in Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, obtained personal data from millions of Facebook users without their consent. The lawsuit, filed by New Mexico's attorney general in 2021, alleged that Meta misled residents about how their data would be shared with third parties, its handling of hate speech and misinformation, and whether it favored certain users in policy enforcement.

The jury found that Meta failed to disclose that it sold user data to outside entities and allowed harmful content to remain on the platform for its own benefit. Judge Francis Mathew will now decide the appropriate monetary penalties for Meta's violations.
