Malaysia renews US$1mil pledge to UN agency for Palestinian refugees

During the Ministerial Meeting in Support of UNRWA, Malaysia reaffirmed its pledge of US$1 million to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees for the 2026-2030 period, maintaining the same five-year commitment as previously made. Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan highlighted that Malaysia has contributed approximately US$6.7 million (RM27.4 million) to UNRWA over the past five years.

He emphasized the importance of sustained and predictable funding for UNRWA, stating that it is essential for the agency to carry out its mandate.

UNRWA continues to provide crucial assistance, protection, and services to millions of Palestinian refugees across the region, serving as a lifeline that must operate without obstruction. At the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly, Malaysia, which has been a regular contributor to UNRWA since 1978, praised its first five-year commitment of US$1 million for 2021-2025.

Following the escalation of the Gaza war, Malaysia significantly increased its support, contributing over US$6 million to the agency since November 2023.

Mohamad Hasan also criticized Israel's incursion into and seizure of the Qalandia Training Centre, asserting that UN premises are inviolable and their privileges and immunities must be respected. He urged the Security Council to implement existing UN resolutions on Palestine and called for the upholding of international law, the UN Charter, and rulings of the International Court of Justice.
