UK confronts Iran over Hormuz, citizens, Saudi Arabia

British Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband confronted Iran over the strategic Strait of Hormuz during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in New York on Thursday. The discussion centered on Iran's set conditions for reopening the waterway and threats linked to Iranian groups in the UK. Miliband emphasized Britain's support for freedom of navigation through Hormuz and its commitment to resolving the conflict diplomatically.

He also reaffirmed London's backing for Saudi Arabia, a close ally that has faced attacks from Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen. The UK has provided limited defensive air-to-air refueling support to Saudi Arabia in response to the intensifying attacks. Miliband warned Tehran against intimidating, threatening, or engaging in hostile activities within UK territory, particularly targeting Jewish communities.

The ministerial meeting marked the first face-to-face encounter between British and Iranian foreign ministers in nearly a year, occurring two months after Britain designated Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization. The talks come as Iran has presented conditions to the US for reopening Hormuz, which is a critical energy chokepoint linking the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, and Arabian Sea.

Despite diplomatic efforts, Iran maintains its demands, and Britain seeks de-escalation with Tehran, support for Gulf allies, and protection for its citizens and communities at home.
