Malaysia gesa perkongsian beban lebih besar bagi pelarian Rohingya

Deputy Laut, Mohamad Hasan, has urged for greater international cooperation and shared responsibility to support countries hosting Rohingya refugees, following the prolonged conflict and dire humanitarian situation in Myanmar. The Malaysia Deputy Foreign Minister stated that a comprehensive solution to the Rohingya issue must address the core issues, including nationality status, alongside creating a safe, voluntary and dignified return to their homeland in Rakhine.

"Greater international cooperation and shared responsibility are needed to support countries hosting Rohingya refugees," he said, while addressing the annual OIC Foreign Ministers' Meeting in New York. He reiterated Malaysia's commitment to ensuring accountability for human rights violations and supporting the cases brought by The Gambia against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Malaysia will await the court's judgment in January 2026. The Deputy Foreign Minister also highlighted Malaysia's active contributions to the OIC's Rohingya Fund and urged other OIC member states to contribute generously. On Afghanistan, Mohamad emphasized Malaysia's continued commitment to human development, socio-economic welfare, and practical initiatives to support the country.

He announced that Malaysia signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the OIC mission in Kabul on August 10, 2026, to implement initiatives such as the Empowering Girls' Education in Afghanistan project. This initiative supports the renovation of two girls' schools in Kabul and the provision of essential teaching materials. "Malaysia views this initiative as a concrete contribution to supporting girls' education and strengthening cooperation with the OIC in Afghanistan," he said.

Mohamad also stressed Malaysia's support for the OIC's framework for constructive engagement with the de facto authorities in Afghanistan, while emphasizing the need for them to fulfill their international obligations and commitments. "Maintaining communication channels is crucial for advancing understanding, addressing concerns, and building confidence for lasting security and stability," he added.

With this in mind, Malaysia joined the OIC's Afghanistan relations cluster in February 2026 and hopes to provide a constructive contribution to the efforts. The Deputy Foreign Minister is currently in New York from September 23-27 to lead Malaysia's delegation to the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly.
