Lula bans sports betting days ahead of Brazil’s election

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced a ban on online sports betting just days before the country's election. The contentious billion-dollar industry has been growing exponentially in recent years, with many Brazilians falling into debt. Opinion polls indicate significant public opposition to the industry, which Lula has called a "disease."

Finance Minister Dario Durigan declared the ban at an event alongside Lula, stating that no longer would money be able to be deposited into betting sites throughout the nation. The government has attempted to regulate the industry but deemed it a public health issue, with over 60 billion reais (US$11 billion) flowing from families to legal betting companies, causing distress and even suicide.

The ban includes new advertising contracts for betting companies, which are major sponsors of Brazilian football clubs, and the current contracts voided after October 6. This decision is expected to have a significant impact on Brazilian sports, as 13 of the country's 20 first division football clubs have online betting sites as their primary shirt sponsors.

Prominent athletes like Neymar and Vinicius Junior were among the industry's most visible faces. Clubs like powerhouse Flamengo expressed concerns about the potential ramifications for professional football, youth academies, women's football, Olympic sports, and various championships.
