Chinese authorities have acquired potentially sensitive components from an Australian F-35 stealth fighter that were diverted en route to the United States, according to Bloomberg's report on September 23. The components - a cockpit canopy and a weapons-bay door - have not been returned, according to sources. The Pentagon is investigating the incident and working to recover the parts.

The shipment, which included the radar-absorbing materials that contribute to the F-35's stealth capabilities, was transported by UPS from Australia to the U.S. in late May. The components were inspected and potentially repaired or disposed of prior to being rerouted to Hong Kong. The incident's rationale, including why the shipment stopped in South Korea and whether the diversion was deliberate or accidental, remains unknown.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has stated it is "not aware of the situation." The Pentagon's F-35 Joint Program Office has confirmed the shipment issue, stating they are actively working with U.S. authorities and industry partners to retrieve and investigate the components, with a focus on preventing future occurrences. Lockheed Martin stated the components were unserviceable and presented a low risk of exploitation.

Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles confirmed on September 22 that Australia was assisting the U.S. and Lockheed Martin with the investigation. He noted that there is a sense of comfort regarding the situation, as the equipment is not classified as highly sensitive. At least two U.S. House committees are currently examining the incident, and the Senate Armed Services Committee is aware of the matter.
