Lands Minister cuts sod for Phase Three of Appiatse Redevelopment Project

Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, marked the start of Phase Three of the Appiatse Redevelopment Project with a sod-cutting ceremony. The redevelopment project was initiated following the tragic Appiatse explosion on January 20, 2022, which resulted in loss of life, injuries, property damage, and displacement of residents.

During the ceremony, Mr. Buah announced that 124 housing units had been delivered under the first phase of the project, and an additional 50 households were compensated under the second phase. Phase Three aims to provide 69 more housing units for the remaining affected families.

The Minister noted that the design of the project had been adjusted to address the needs and feedback of beneficiaries, with the goal of creating a safer, greener, and more resilient community. He stressed the importance of quality work and urged the contractors, consultants, and technical team not to approach the project merely as another contract, as the structures would become homes for the affected families.

Mr. Buah assured stakeholders that concerns over construction materials had been addressed and highlighted the need for effective monitoring and community participation in the project. Western Regional Minister Joseph Nelson emphasized that the Western Regional Coordinating Council would continue to oversee the project to ensure timely completion and warned against unnecessary disputes that could hinder progress. He encouraged collaboration to provide permanent accommodation for all affected families.

Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni-Valley Robert Wisdom Cudjoe emphasized the significance of the Local Implementation Committee, advising beneficiaries to direct their complaints through the Committee rather than confronting contractors directly. He raised concerns about compensation and accountability following the 2022 explosion, urging Maxam Company to fulfill its responsibilities regarding insurance and compensation for those injured or who lost property and livelihoods.

Project Consultant at AESL Robert Wisdom Cudjoe provided details of Phase Three, stating that the 69 housing units would consist of 17 one-bedroom units, 23 two-bedroom units, 14 three-bedroom units, 12 four-bedroom units, one five-bedroom unit, and two six-bedroom units. He assured that procurement arrangements were well underway to ensure the project's smooth execution within a year.

Divisional Chief of Beppoh Nana Atta Kojo Brembi II expressed gratitude to the Government for the progress made in redeveloping the community.
