Kamaljeet survived a horror road accident; three years later, he wins Asian Games gold

Three years ago, Kamaljeet Singh was in a hospital bed recovering from a devastating road accident which claimed the lives of two others. Today, he stands atop the Asian Games podium holding a gold medal around his neck. The 23-year-old Indian shooter teamed up with Suruchi Singh to secure the 10m air pistol mixed team gold at the Asian Games happening in Japan. This victory completes a remarkable journey for Kamaljeet, who managed to turn a near career-ending accident into a triumph.

On September 25th, 2026, Kamaljeet was returning to his village of Sulkha in Haryana after a day of training when the autorickshaw he was in crashed. Two other passengers were killed in the incident. Kamaljeet survived but was severely injured, fracturing his femur, and had to spend about a month in a private hospital in Gurugram.

His family had to take on debt of around Rs 4 lakh for his treatment. His father, Ratiram works as a contract labourer in a paint factory and his family owns approximately two acres of farmland. Ratiram expressed his gratitude to the Almighty, saying, "Kamaljeet was fortunate because two people died in the accident. I thank God for saving Kamaljeet and for giving him the medal in the Asian Games."
