Israeli PM Netanyahu delivers fiery, defiant speech at UN General Assembly

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly on Thursday, laying into both adversaries and allies during his politically-charged remarks. The address came as Netanyahu prepares for a crucial reelection campaign, which takes place on October 27.

During his speech, Netanyahu took aim at Iran, labeling it a "murderous dictatorship" and alleging it is unable to develop nuclear weapons. He also criticized New York's first Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani, accusing him of antisemitism. Mamdani had threatened to execute an ICC arrest warrant against Netanyahu, a claim Netanyahu denies.

Netanyahu's speech also included harsh words for Britain and France, accusing them of colonialism and imposing sanctions on Israeli exports from the occupied West Bank. French President Emmanuel Macron was specifically singled out for his UN claims that Hamas was not active in the West Bank. Netanyahu also accused Turkey of backing Iran-backed Islamist group Hamas, referring to its leader, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as a "tyrant."

The speech sparked uproar in the chamber, with dozens of envoys walking out and some jeering and booing. Netanyahu's own team applauded, while the speaker of the session urged everyone to maintain order. Some protesters, including Hollywood star Susan Sarandon, were detained outside the UN. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was unable to attend the event, delivering a video message rejecting the accusations and punitive measures against Israel.
