Albury childcare centre shut down as safety probe launched

The New South Wales Early Learning Commission has ordered the Kidscape Early Learning Centre in East Albury to close for six months due to alleged safety risks. The commission visited the centre multiple times over two years and issued several compliance actions before making the decision. During a recent visit, officials found that the service was not operating in a safe manner for children.

Commissioner Daryl Currie explained that the commission prioritizes short-term inconvenience over potential long-term harm. The investigation revealed issues such as insufficient supervision, failure to protect children from hazards, unsafe indoor and outdoor environments, lack of awareness about child protection laws, and inadequate staff training.

The center also had concerns over the appropriateness of resources used for different age groups. While the regulator acknowledges the inconvenience this closure will cause for Albury families, decisive action was deemed necessary. The commission has assured parents they will help them find alternative childcare options in the area.

Families seeking support are directed to the Starting Blocks website or the commission directly. A sign outside the center notified parents that it would remain closed and no new enrollments would be accepted during this period.
