Iran proposes to reopen Strait of Hormuz in seven days

Iran has offered a seven-day truce and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to end the ongoing conflict, according to Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. This proposal, unveiled during his visit to the United States for the UN General Assembly, stipulates that hostilities across the Middle East, including Lebanon, must cease for a week.

In addition, he claims Iran would release frozen assets valued at over $12 billion and lift sanctions on Iranian oil if the US responds favorably. The strait would only reopen on the seventh day of this cease-fire. Iranian authorities, however, have not confirmed the details of the proposal. Araghchi met with US envoy Steve Witkoff, who is accompanying President Trump to the UN General Assembly.

China's support for the proposal was also mentioned, as Chinese President Xi Jinping is currently visiting the US. Iran's Revolutionary Guards spokesman, Hossein Mohebi, added that ending hostilities in Yemen was another demand of Tehran. Despite a June memorandum of understanding intended to halt the war, reopen the strait, and commence talks on Iran's nuclear program, the accord collapsed after Iran began targeting US-approving ships, sparking retaliatory US airstrikes on Iranian coastal areas.
