Hurricane Nolo predicted to bring ‘life-threatening flooding’ to Hawaii

Hurricane Nolo is intensifying south of Hawaii, with forecasters warning of potentially devastating flooding on the Big Island over the weekend. As of 12 UTC on Friday, September 25, Nolo boasts maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (140 kph), classifying it as a Category 1 hurricane. The storm is presently situated approximately 220 miles (355 kilometers) south of Hawaii's South Point, and around 410 miles (655 kilometers) south-southeast of Honolulu, moving in a north-northeast direction at a speed of about 5 mph (8 km/h).

Nolo began as a tropical storm on September 23, rapidly intensifying early on September 24 and attaining hurricane status by the evening of that day. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) forecasts further strengthening for Nolo, with the potential for it to evolve into a major hurricane (Category 3 or above) this weekend. While the storm's center is anticipated to stay well south of the main Hawaiian islands, it still presents a significant threat, as it could result in "catastrophic and life-threatening flash flooding" throughout the weekend.

Heavy rain is Nolo's primary concern, with the National Hurricane Center predicting 15-30 inches of rainfall in the eastern and southern areas of the Big Island, with peaks reaching 35 inches. Such intense rainfall could generate catastrophic life-threatening flooding and mudslides, specifically in areas with steep terrain. Similar risks exist in the western parts of the Big Island, potentially receiving up to 10 inches of rain, and Maui, which might receive up to 15 inches.

The rest of the Hawaiian Islands are expected to receive rainfall totals between 1 to 3 inches, with maximum amounts of 6 inches, potentially leading to isolated flooding. Nolo could also bring a storm surge of 1 to 3 feet above ground in some parts of Hawaii County, alongside hazardous surf and rip currents on exposed shores.
