Gun used to kill brothers not weapon found in car, expert tells court

A court has heard that the weapon presented as evidence in the murder trial of three Mexican men accused of killing two Australian brothers and their American friend in Mexico is not the murder weapon. The victims, Jake and Callum Robinson, and Carter Rhoad, were found dead in a well on the Baja Peninsula after a surfing trip. The prosecution claims the murders were the result of a robbery gone awry, while the defense argues there is insufficient evidence to support this theory.

Forensic specialists testified that the fatal injuries were caused by bullets from a .45-calibre gun, while the victims also suffered penetrating skull wounds. The gun found in the vehicle owned by one of the suspects had no serial number and was classified as an unfinished frame, commonly known as an "80 percent gun" or ghost gun.

Jesús Gerardo's ex-girlfriend testified that the 9mm gun belonged to him, while another witness suggested the victims were likely shot from behind due to their height. The fourth body found in the well with the victims had also died from a penetrating skull injury and was estimated to have been in the well for between two and four weeks.
