GCAA assures safety won’t be sacrificed to attract more airlines

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has affirmed that safety will not be sacrificed in its efforts to attract more airlines to the country's aviation market. Director General Rev Stephen Wilfred Arthur stated that the Authority is open to new entrants but insists they must comply with all regulatory requirements. "We are very much open, and we create a level playing field for all prospective applicants or airlines, without any discrimination, whether you are from here or from there," he said.

Applications that meet the required criteria will receive necessary regulatory support to operate. However, Arthur emphasized that safety remains a top priority. "At all times we will never compromise on safety and security just for the sake of injecting the space with more players," he reiterated. The GCAA operates under strict regulations due to the potentially catastrophic consequences of any breaches.

Aviation is heavily regulated, from the initial application stage to ongoing operations, both domestically and internationally. Arthur explained that increasing competition is crucial for making domestic air travel more affordable. More airlines would increase capacity and create competition over service quality and fares, potentially lowering airfares and enhancing service.

The domestic market has significant growth potential, and stimulating it with competitive airlines is essential. Lower fares could encourage more people to fly domestically, further boosting the sector. Arthur also welcomed the government's removal of import duties on aircraft spares, which could help domestic airlines reduce operating costs.

However, he noted that fuel and leasing costs also significantly impact airlines. The regulator's stance is to promote competition while ensuring safety and security are fully protected.
