GCAA assures safety won’t be sacrificed to attract more airlines

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has stated that it will not sacrifice safety to attract more airlines to Ghana's domestic aviation market. Director General Rev Stephen Wilfred Arthur emphasized that the Authority will create a level playing field for all applicants, regardless of their origin, and will not discriminate.

Prospective airlines must meet all regulatory requirements, and the GCAA will provide necessary support to those who do. Safety and security are non-negotiable aspects of the industry, and any breach could jeopardize passengers and aircraft. Aviation regulations are strict and apply from the initial application process through to operational phases.

Arthur highlighted that increasing competition is crucial to making domestic air travel more affordable, as more airlines would boost capacity and competition over service quality and fares. This could lead to lower airfares while improving service overall. Ghana's domestic market has growth potential, and stimulating it with healthy competition is essential.

The GCAA also welcomed the government's removal of import duties on aircraft spares, as it could reduce operating costs for domestic airlines. However, fuel and leasing costs are significant factors affecting airline operations. The regulator's stance is to encourage competition while safeguarding safety and security at all times.
