Eggs and fish are costing more than ever in Spain. Here’s the supermarket coming out on top

Eggs and fish prices have skyrocketed in Spain over the past year, with shoppers finding their shopping bills soaring at supermarkets. To save money, savvy consumers are comparing prices across the country's main supermarkets. A recent test by consumer group OCU found Lidl's shopping basket to be the cheapest, costing €23.21 for a list of 10 basic items, just 2% cheaper than Carrefour and 2.3% cheaper than Mercadona.

While Carrefour edges out Lidl on some items like minced beef, it cannot compete on eggs, which are cheaper at Lidl and Mercadona. Fish prices have also risen sharply, with whole bream going for €9.95 per kilo at some stores, making it a pricey choice. Lidl is the cheapest for some products, while Carrefour provides additional discounts with its loyalty card.

For the best deals, consumers may need to shop at multiple supermarkets, using Carrefour for meat, Lidl for basics, and Mercadona for fresh produce.
