Education Ministry to meet teacher unions on Monday as strike begins over promotion arrears

The Ministry of Education plans to convene with teacher unions on Monday, September 28, to address a dispute over unpaid promotion arrears and other outstanding demands. This meeting comes amid a nationwide strike initiated by teacher unions, who are protesting unpaid promotion arrears and delays in negotiations with the government.

Hasmin Mohammed, the Press Secretary and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Education, disclosed this information on Joy FM’s Midday News on Friday, September 25. He stated that the Education Minister would engage with various stakeholders to resolve the dispute and prevent further disruptions to the academic calendar. Mohammed emphasized that the Ministry cannot resolve the issue alone, as it requires the involvement of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission and the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department.

The meeting aims to provide a platform for the relevant institutions and unions to engage directly. The Ministry expressed deep concern about the strike's potential impact on the academic calendar, as significant efforts have been made to restore it after previous disruptions. Pupils and students from kindergarten through university have been reported for September, marking the first time in Ghanaian education history.

Mohammed warned that continued industrial action could undermine these gains, particularly given that students had only recently returned to school. He assured that Monday’s meeting would bring all parties together to address the unions' concerns and seek an end to the strike, vowing to do everything within the Ministry's capacity to prevent further disruption to the academic calendar.
