ECG workers to embark on demo against planned privatisation

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) workers, represented by the Senior Staff Union (SSU) and Junior Staff Union (JSU), are preparing for a nationwide demonstration on September 29, 2026, to voice their concerns over the proposed private sector participation (PSP) in the power distributor. The protest will be a coordinated effort among all ECG operational regions, culminating in a petition presentation to President John Dramani Mahama.

The SSU National Chairman, Christopher Apawu, and JSU counterpart, Lucky Larry Agboka, have instructed divisional and branch leaders to rally their members for the event. The demonstration is set to take place from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In Accra, the protest will begin at the Trades Union Congress (TUC) forecourt, while Kumasi-based workers will gather at the ECG Regional Office close to the Airport Roundabout.

Other regions will follow suit, with specific assembly points announced later. Post-march, participants will reconvene at their designated assembly points for a briefing before concluding the demonstration. This protest marks the latest stage of industrial action announced by the unions, who have intensified their opposition to the proposed PSP arrangement.

As part of ongoing efforts, ECG workers will continue to wear red armbands until further notice. The Public Utility Workers Union (PUWU), coordinating the demonstration, will lead the nationwide exercise, having already notified the Inspector General of Police about the demonstration in compliance with Section 1(2) of the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491).

National and regional committees will oversee the protest, with additional details to be shared with workers through their respective structures.
