Brand Bundle, the tiny thrift shop built on trust

In Johor, Malaysia, a tiny thrift shop named Brand Bundle Malaysia is revolutionizing the retail experience. Founded by 31-year-old Mohd Idham Zamzuri, the shop operates without a cashier, relying on a trust-based self-service model. Idham, who started selling preloved goods at 19 with a mere RM300, has transformed his shop into a modest 3m by 3m space that runs on an innovative approach borrowed from unmanned stores in Japan.

Customers browse, select, and pay through QR codes, with three CCTV cameras monitoring the premises. Despite the high-tech appearance, Idham managed to keep costs low, spending around RM8,000 to set up and maintain the shop. The shop offers clothing items at affordable prices, some available in bundles such as two pieces for RM50 or three for RM100.

Idham's schedule involves frequent visits to the shop, where he replenishes stock approximately twice a week. Trust and clear labeling are crucial, ensuring customers can shop confidently without assistance. While the concept relies heavily on trust, it also prioritizes providing ample information to customers. Idham emphasizes that the small shop is not about eliminating people from retail but about making small businesses thrive with limited resources.

The shop, located in Kampung Melayu Majidee, has garnered positive feedback from customers who appreciate the straightforward payment process and easy-to-find product information. For Idham, the success of Brand Bundle Malaysia lies in its ability to adapt to limited space, time, and overheads while potentially benefiting other sectors by reducing operating costs without compromising customer comfort.
