Appeals court allows Pentagon to label Anthropic a national security risk

The Trump administration has been granted the power to label AI firm Anthropic as a national security risk by a federal appeals court, expanding its authority to designate US businesses in this manner. The D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 2-1 in favor of the Defense Department, stating that the Pentagon had good reason to deem Anthropic's AI products a supply chain risk due to the company's restrictions on certain tasks.

Anthropic has pledged not to utilize its products for autonomous weapons or mass domestic surveillance. The court acknowledged that the integration of Anthropic's Claude model into the Department's information systems or by its contractors would pose a nationally covered security risk. This decision could have significant reputational and financial implications for Anthropic, potentially causing a loss of hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.
