40 years ago September 25, 1986: Congress undecided on GNLF

On September 25, 1986, the Congress (I) Legislature Party met to determine its stance on the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) movement. Despite a heated debate led by WBPCC (I) president Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, the party could not come to an agreement. The resolution describing the movement as anti-national was brought forth by six Congress (I) MLAs, but the party decided to revisit the matter on September 29.

Meanwhile, Pakistan accused India of employing delaying tactics while discussing the technical plan to construct a barrage on the Jhelum in Kashmir, which they claimed was a violation of the Indus Basin Treaty.

The Delhi Development Authority recommended a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the unauthorized acquisition of an industrial plot valued at more than Rs 50 lakh. The lease deed and other documents for the plot had been forged, leading to the demolition of an industrial unit established on the land. The Delhi Development Authority seized possession of the plot.

In a separate development, the Seoul Asian Games organizing committee released a revised Indian map in the Asiad News. The map was published in response to India's threat to withdraw from the games' closing ceremony due to the exclusion of Jammu and Kashmir from the previously published map. Despite the Indian chef-de-mission, A K Mattoo, expressing his displeasure, there was no apology or expression of regret from the organizing committee.
