Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error

Texas election officials have discovered an unknown number of voter registration applications that were not processed due to an error by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). The applications, submitted through the DPS online driver’s license portal, were not sent to county voter registrars for processing. State officials confirmed they would begin delivering the unsent registrations overnight.

The issue, which could affect a significant number of voters, comes less than two weeks before the Oct. 5 voter registration deadline. Voters whose registrations were affected can still have their ballots counted if they submitted their registration before the deadline, as they can cast a provisional ballot. The Texas Association of County Election Officials is working to determine the scale of the issue, as DPS officials have not disclosed the number of affected voters or the cause of the incomplete records.
